On September 9, 2014, 49-year-old Dickey Dean "Dick" Mashek was found deceased in his Box Elder, South Dakota, home. An autopsy confirmed that Mashek died from a gunshot wound. Authorities arrested 23-year-old Kelly Ann Croyle, Mashek's ex-girlfriend, charging her with second-degree murder. At the time of her arrest, Croyle was in possession of the handgun believed to have been used in the shooting and had $18,000 in cash.
