On March 7, 2018, 20-year-old Lake Taylor was fatally shot in Box Elder, South Dakota. The incident occurred in the early hours at the D&L Bar, where deputies responded to reports of shots fired.

Subsequent investigations revealed that the firearms used in the shooting had been illegally obtained.
