On the night of January 9, 2021, a 38-year-old Hispanic man named Adalberto Ferrer-Machado was killed in his Mitchell, South Dakota, apartment. The events leading to his death began when two men, Luis Javier Perez-Melendez and Jose Carlos Gil Morales-Acevedo, went to his residence with the intention of stealing a handgun.
