Do you know who murdered Daniel Bailey? In the summer of 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the evening calm in a Northeast Washington, D.C. neighborhood, leaving a young life extinguished. On the first of August, at approximately 7:51 p.m., police responded to reports of a shooting on Tuckerman Street. There, they found 14-year-old David Bailey, a resident of Northeast, D.C., suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate response, the young man was pronounced dead at the scene. Another adult male was also discovered nearby with non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The investigation into the teenager's death unfolded over the following months. Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department worked to piece together the events of that tragic evening. Their efforts led them to identify a suspect, and in October 2024, an arrest warrant was issued for 17-year-old Andre Chillous of Northwest, D.C., charging him with first-degree premeditated murder while armed.
Although he was a juvenile at the time of the shooting, he was to be charged as an adult.
The search for the suspect continued until the end of February 2025. On the 28th of that month, authorities located and arrested the now 18-year-old Andre Chillous. According to court documents, the incident began when David Bailey and a group of friends, including the second victim, entered a recreational center. Upon allegedly seeing Chillous, they immediately tried to leave. It is alleged that Chillous then followed them down a sidewalk and fired multiple shots, fatally striking Bailey and injuring his companion. While the defense has argued that Chillous acted in self-defense, a judge found probable cause to proceed with the first-degree murder charge, noting that the evidence showed Chillous firing at the victims as they were trying to get away.
