In the early evening of December 28, 2015, violence shattered the quiet of a Southeast Washington, D.C. neighborhood. Darnell Antonio Mayfield, a 34-year-old resident of the area, was in the 2300 block of Hartford Street SE when he was targeted in a shooting. Police responded to reports of gunfire around 5:35 p.m. and discovered Mayfield suffering from gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical personnel transported him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he succumbed to them shortly after arrival. The Metropolitan Police Department opened a homicide investigation into the death of the male victim.
