In the small town of Hillsboro, Alabama, City Marshal Kinnard Barnes found himself in the midst of a volatile situation. He was a male officer of the law, and his age at the time of his death is not known. He had responded to a report of a fight and had already taken one of the individuals involved into custody. His duty, however, was not yet complete, as the second man implicated in the altercation remained at large. Marshal Barnes, determined to restore order, set out to apprehend this second individual.
As Marshal Barnes approached, the suspect, aware of the lawman's intent, fled into a nearby house. Inside, he armed himself with a shotgun, escalating the tension of the encounter. Undeterred, Marshal Barnes moved towards the house to make the arrest. In a sudden and tragic turn of events, as the Marshal neared the dwelling, the suspect fired the shotgun, striking Barnes in the head and killing him instantly.
In the days that followed the fatal shooting, law enforcement was successful in apprehending the man responsible for Marshal Barnes's death. The suspect was subsequently put on trial for the murder of the city marshal.
