On December 10, 1892, Deputy Sheriff Henry William Barganier of Butler County, Alabama, was fatally shot while attempting to arrest a man wanted on multiple charges. Accompanied by several men, Deputy Barganier approached a boarding house where the suspect was staying. Upon entering the room, the suspect opened fire with a shotgun, striking Deputy Barganier in the face. Despite immediate assistance, Deputy Barganier succumbed to his injuries.
