On December 24, 1910, in Oak Grove, Alabama, Deputy Sheriff David Olius "Ollie" Battle, aged 33, was visiting his parents for Christmas Eve. A neighbor, Jepp Knight, approached him to report gunfire at the nearby Laird homestead.
