In the early spring of 1918, a dedicated police officer patrolled the streets of Montgomery, Alabama, his presence a familiar sight to the local community. On the evening of Friday, March 1, what began as a routine beat for Officer Milton Goocher would end in tragedy, cutting short a career of eight years of service to the city.
While walking his beat, Officer Goocher's attention was drawn to three men standing together. As he drew nearer, he observed that one of the individuals was holding a gun. Recognizing the potential for danger, he moved to investigate. However, as he approached, the three men suddenly broke and ran. The man who had been holding the firearm turned as he fled and fired at Officer Goocher. The shot proved to be fatal, and Officer Goocher fell, his life taken in an instant in the line of duty.
The immediate aftermath of the shooting saw a swift response from the Montgomery Police Department. An investigation was launched, and authorities were successful in apprehending all three men who had been present at the scene of the crime. The individuals were subsequently charged with the murder of Officer Goocher, and the community looked towards the justice system for a resolution.
Despite the initial arrests and charges, the path to justice took an unexpected turn. The case against the three suspects proceeded through the legal system for over three and a half years. Finally, on December 21, 1921, a decision was reached that would leave the murder of Officer Milton Goocher officially unresolved. Citing a lack of sufficient evidence, the murder charges against all three suspects were dismissed. No one was ever convicted for the killing of the fallen officer, leaving a somber and unanswered chapter in the history of the Montgomery Police Department.
