On October 6, 1918, Special Deputy Sheriff Benjamin Lawrence "Lon" O'Bryant, aged 48, was fatally shot while investigating gunfire near his home in Piedmont, Alabama. Upon hearing shots, he encountered a buggy on the nearby roadway and ordered its occupants to stop and raise their hands. Unaware of the earlier gunfire and unfamiliar with Deputy O'Bryant, the occupants mistook his command for a robbery attempt.
