On October 6, 1918, Special Deputy Sheriff Benjamin Lawrence "Lon" O'Bryant, aged 48, was fatally shot while investigating gunfire near his home in Piedmont, Alabama. Upon hearing shots, he encountered a buggy on the nearby roadway and ordered its occupants to stop and raise their hands.
