On January 4, 1922, Deputy Sheriff Carl Alex Brill of the Mobile County Sheriff's Office in Alabama was fatally ambushed shortly after he and two fellow deputies dismantled a liquor still near Calvert, approximately 40 miles north of Mobile. The owner of the still was apprehended, charged with Brill's murder, and subsequently convicted. Initially sentenced to death, the perpetrator's sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment, and he was paroled in 1940.
