In the early winter of 1922, the life of Deputy Sheriff Carl Alex Brill of the Mobile County Sheriff's Office was tragically cut short. At 39 years of age, the male deputy was killed in the line of duty on Wednesday, January 4th. The incident occurred in the vicinity of Calvert, Alabama, where Deputy Brill, accompanied by two other deputies, had carried out the destruction of an illegal liquor still.
