On October 10, 2014, David Patrick Kyles, a 29-year-old male from the Mobile, Alabama area, was driving and on the phone with his girlfriend when he mentioned he was being pulled over by law enforcement. This seemingly routine traffic stop would be his last known communication. Later, Kyles' body was discovered, having been shot multiple times and left handcuffed near the intersection of Theodore Dawes Road and Interstate 10.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the death of David Patrick Kyles stretched on for years, becoming a cold case. A significant breakthrough came in December 2022, when Mobile police arrested Jervoris Durmaine Scarbrough and charged him with the murder. Authorities alleged that on the night of the killing, Scarbrough was impersonating a police officer and had used a surplus police vehicle, equipped with blue lights and a stolen Mobile Police Department license plate, to pull Kyles over.
In February 2026, the trial for Jervoris Scarbrough began. Prosecutors laid out their case, asserting that Scarbrough was the gunman who handcuffed Kyles and then shot him multiple times. The defense, however, argued that there was not enough evidence to definitively connect Scarbrough to the crime. In a separate matter, Scarbrough also faced federal drug trafficking charges in late 2023, as part of an alleged conspiracy to sell marijuana smuggled on commercial flights.
