On April 25, 2018, 21-year-old Carey Donte Wheat Jr., a Black male also known as 'Wee Wee,' was shot and killed while sitting in his car in the 400 block of North Lafayette Street in Mobile, Alabama. When Mobile Police responded to the scene at approximately 12 p.m., they found Wheat deceased from a gunshot wound. A second victim, a 19-year-old male, was also shot and transported to the hospital for his injuries.

The investigation into Wheat's death revealed it was part of a string of violent, retaliatory acts that stemmed from a dispute over a $5 dice game. The series of events began on April 24, 2018, when shots were fired into homes in the Campground Community on Basil Street. Later that evening, a shooting on Driftwood Drive North resulted in the death of Jaymarcus Jefferson, who was struck by a bullet inside a home. Wheat's murder the following day is believed to have been in retaliation for Jefferson's death.

On May 22, 2018, Mobile Police arrested two brothers, 22-year-old Lacedrick Lindsey and 24-year-old Raheem Morrissette, in connection with the murder of Carey Wheat. Both men were charged with murder and first-degree assault for the shooting of the second victim. Authorities stated that the shootings were a form of vigilante justice. The arrested suspects lived on Driftwood Drive, where the connected homicide had occurred.

The cycle of violence tragically continued to affect the Wheat family. Carey's brother, Cornelius Wheat, who was with him and survived the April 25th attack, was killed in a separate shooting on May 5, 2021.
