Sheriff Matthew L. Wann, aged 55, was shot and killed on May 3, 1932, while serving a warrant at a residence near Scottsboro, Alabama. During the incident, Sheriff Wann was handcuffing a man when the man's brother picked up a shotgun and fired, striking the sheriff in the back and killing him instantly. The suspect, who was 20 years old at the time, disappeared and was never apprehended.
