On December 4, 2020, 20-year-old Daniel Lamar Merit, a resident of Century, Florida, was fatally shot in Jackson, Alabama. The incident occurred near a McDonald's parking lot, where Merit was in a vehicle with his college roommate, 20-year-old Gordon Kolby Marks. Authorities reported that the two were engaged in "gun play" when the firearm discharged, resulting in Merit's death. Investigators indicated that alcohol was involved in the incident.
