On January 28, 1936, in Wilcox County, Alabama, Chief Deputy Sheriff Thomas Jenkins Jones, aged 57, was fatally shot during a confrontation at the county jail. While attempting to arrest a suspect, the individual produced a concealed handgun and opened fire, critically wounding a jailor and mortally injuring Chief Deputy Jones. In the ensuing gunfire, the Wilcox County Sheriff shot and killed the assailant.
