On September 8, 1938, Deputy Sheriff Goode King Tait, aged 34, was fatally shot while pursuing a suspect in a wooded area near Camden, Wilcox County, Alabama. The suspect fled into the woods, prompting Deputy Tait to follow, during which he was mortally wounded by gunfire.
Following the incident, a posse was organized to apprehend the assailant. Three days later, on September 11, 1938, the suspect was located near Selma, Alabama, where he was shot and killed by the pursuing posse.
