Police Officer Benjamin T. "Benny" McDonald, aged 27, was fatally shot on November 15, 1936, while responding to a disturbance call in Lanett, Alabama. On that Sunday night, Officer McDonald and fellow officer Eddie Harris observed a car driving erratically in the downtown area. The car, a blue Chrysler sedan, was driven by G.M. Browning, a former police chief of Lanett who had been fired earlier that year for disorderly conduct. The passenger was J.L. Smallwood.
