On May 2, 1948, in Courtland, Alabama, Chief of Police William Houston McCormack was fatally shot by a man harboring a grudge against him. The assailant was the father of an individual Chief McCormack had arrested the previous week. This arrest, along with prior incidents, fueled the father's resentment.
