On May 2, 1948, in Courtland, Alabama, Chief of Police William Houston McCormack was fatally shot by a man harboring a grudge against him. The assailant was the father of an individual Chief McCormack had arrested the previous week. This arrest, along with prior incidents, fueled the father's resentment. On that fateful day, the man confronted Chief McCormack as he sat in a drug store on the town's main street and, without provocation, opened fire, shooting him six times.
