On May 17, 1951, Chief of Police Leonard J. Floyd, aged 32, of the Boaz Police Department in Alabama, was fatally shot while attempting to serve a warrant. Accompanied by Marshall County Sheriff E.M. Boyles and Chief Deputy Sheriff Washington May Bennett, Chief Floyd approached the farmhouse of 40-year-old farmer and bootlegger Aubrey Kilpatrick, who was wanted for assault with intent to kill a neighbor.
