In the late afternoon of a Tuesday in Boaz, Alabama, a dispute over a shared bank account tragically escalated, leaving a young man dead. Colton Craig McKinney, a 30-year-old male from Crossville, was fatally shot on February 18, 2020, in the parking lot of the Family Security Credit Union.
The incident unfolded when Jossie Cheyenne Bowen, then 26, and his sister, who was McKinney's ex-wife, learned that McKinney was at the credit union.
They went to the location to confront him about a joint account he still held with his former spouse. The confrontation in the parking lot turned violent, and McKinney was shot. Despite the efforts of medics who performed CPR at the scene, he succumbed to his injuries before he could be transported to a hospital.
Responding to the call at approximately 2:49 p.m., Boaz police officers found Bowen in the lobby of the credit union and arrested him. Investigators discovered a 9mm pistol in the back pocket of Bowen's pants, which they identified as the alleged murder weapon. Following the incident, police interviewed several witnesses.
Bowen was taken to the Boaz City Jail and subsequently booked into the Marshall County Jail, charged with murder. His bond was set at $200,000. While McKinney's ex-wife was present at the scene of the confrontation, she was not immediately charged with any crime.
Court records indicate that legal proceedings in the case against Jossie Cheyenne Bowen took place. An appeal was filed in his case in March 2023, which was classified as an 'Appeal - Felony - Probation Revocation,' suggesting a conviction and a subsequent violation of probation terms. The appeal was ultimately affirmed.
