On April 13, 1952, 75-year-old Deputy Sheriff J. Kyle Young of the Tallapoosa County Sheriff's Department in Alabama was fatally shot while investigating a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival at the residence, Deputy Young and the Dadeville police chief were met with gunfire; Deputy Young was struck in the stomach by a .22 caliber rifle. The police chief subdued the assailant by striking him with the butt of his rifle.
