On October 25, 1963, Special Agent Joe Brooks Cooper, along with other agents, executed a federal search warrant at Club 92, a dance hall located about five miles southwest of Brent, Alabama. The club was operated by Tod Tidwell, who was suspected of selling moonshine whiskey. As the agents entered the club, Tidwell, who had initially feigned cooperation, suddenly drew a .38 caliber revolver from his pocket and fired twice.
