In the summer of 2022, a devastating series of events unfolded in Bibb County, Alabama, leading to the tragic death of a dedicated law enforcement officer. On June 29, 32-year-old Bibb County Sheriff's Deputy Bradley Steven Henry Johnson was involved in a pursuit of a stolen vehicle. The chase came to a violent end when the suspect opened fire on Deputy Johnson and his partner, Deputy Chris Poole.
Both deputies were struck by gunfire.
Deputy Johnson was critically wounded, having been shot in the head. He was rushed to UAB Hospital in Birmingham where he was placed on life support. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away on June 30, 2022. His family made the decision to donate his organs, allowing him to save more lives even in death. Deputy Poole was also wounded in the shooting but thankfully recovered from his injuries.
Following the shooting, a massive 16-hour manhunt was launched for the suspect, who fled the scene on foot. The search involved numerous law enforcement agencies and concluded with the apprehension of 26-year-old Austin Patrick Hall, who was found hiding in a tent. It was later revealed that Hall was a convicted felon who had been released from prison just two months prior to the shooting.
In the wake of Deputy Johnson's death, Austin Patrick Hall faced a string of serious charges, including three counts of capital murder, one count of attempted murder, and one count of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. On June 16, 2023, Hall was indicted on these charges. The case brought to light concerns about Alabama's correctional incentive 'good time' laws, which had allowed for Hall's early release. In response, Governor Kay Ivey issued an executive order to address the deficiencies in the system. The State of Alabama also announced a $1 million settlement for Deputy Johnson's two daughters.
