On a fall day in Bibb County, Alabama, what began as a routine federal search warrant execution ended in a hail of gunfire and the death of two law enforcement officers. It was October 25, 1963, when 36-year-old Special Agent Ralph A. Holt, a man known for his professionalism and outstanding investigative work, accompanied his fellow agents to a dance hall known as Club 92, located a few miles southwest of Brent.
The team of officers, which included Special Agents Joe Cooper, Richard
Dickinson, S. B. Whitlow, and Alabama Beverage Control Agent Harold Hartranft, was there to serve a warrant at the establishment operated by Tod Tidwell. Initially, Tidwell appeared to be cooperative with the agents as they began their search of the premises. However, the pretense of compliance was shattered in an instant.
Without warning, Tidwell drew a. 38 caliber revolver from his pocket and opened fire. The first two shots he fired struck and instantly killed Agent Cooper and wounded Agent Holt. Despite his injuries, Holt immediately took up a defensive position, and a fierce exchange of gunfire ensued. In the chaos of the small club, Agent Holt was also fatally wounded.
As the sound of shots echoed through the dance hall, Agent Whitlow, who had been elsewhere on the property, arrived and engaged Tidwell in another gunfight, likely wounding him multiple times. Tidwell attempted to flee to the basement, but his escape was cut off by Agent Hartranft, who was already in the lower level of the building and fired several shots, driving the now seriously wounded gunman back upstairs. Tidwell eventually collapsed behind the bar and lost consciousness. Agents Holt and Cooper were pronounced dead at the scene. Their assailant, Tod Tidwell, was transported to Perry County Hospital in Marion, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
