On July 29, 1973, Chief of Police William Howard Wilson, aged 37, was fatally shot in Cedar Bluff, Alabama. He was attempting to serve a warrant on a local tow truck operator who had assaulted two officers earlier that week. The suspect had previously refused to present his driver's license during a traffic stop, leading to the initial warrant.
