In the late summer of 1977, a veteran law enforcement officer's act of consideration for a prisoner's comfort tragically led to his own untimely death. Captain William Henry Beard, a 63-year-old White male, had dedicated 16 years of his life to serving the community of Oxford, Alabama, as a member of the Oxford Police Department. On August 19, 1977, his commitment to his duty placed him in a vulnerable position that would ultimately cost him his life.
