In the early morning hours of June 7, 2003, a violent outburst shattered the quiet of Fayette, Alabama, leaving a community in mourning and a police department devastated. Leslie 'Ace' Mealer, a 38-year-old male dispatcher, was killed in the line of duty alongside two of his colleagues, Corporal James Eddie Crump, 40, and Officer Arnold Gunther Strickland, 55.
The tranquility of the small town was irrevocably broken when an 18-year-old suspect, Devin Darnell Moore, turned a routine booking into a deadly rampage.
The tragic events began to unfold around 3:00 a.m. when Officer Strickland and Corporal Crump found Moore asleep in a stolen vehicle. They took him into custody and transported him to the Fayette Police Department for booking. During the process, as the officers were fingerprinting him, Moore managed to seize Officer Strickland's service weapon. In a sudden and brutal act of violence, he shot and killed both officers. He then encountered Mealer, the dispatcher on duty, and fatally shot him as well before fleeing the scene in a stolen police cruiser.
The alarm was raised by a firefighter from the adjacent fire station who heard the gunshots. A manhunt for Moore ensued, and he was apprehended a few hours later in Mississippi. The community was left to grapple with the loss of three dedicated public servants.
Devin Moore, who also used the name Devin Thompson, was charged with capital murder. During his trial in 2005, the defense argued that a history of abuse and an obsession with the video game 'Grand Theft Auto' contributed to his actions. However, the jury found him guilty, and he was subsequently sentenced to death. Following his conviction, Moore was placed on death row at Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore, where he has since been pursuing appeals of his sentence. The senseless act of violence that claimed the lives of Leslie Mealer, James Crump, and Arnold Strickland left a lasting scar on the community of Fayette and served as a grim reminder of the dangers faced by those in law enforcement.
