On June 12, 2007, Corey Kermaine Smith, a 21-year-old man from Birmingham, was killed in the city’s West End area in a burst of violence that seemed to rise out of a confrontation and then end almost as quickly as it began. Publicly available reporting places the shooting just east of Village Creek, near the intersection of 23rd Street Southwest and Fulton Avenue Southwest.
