On March 19, 2016, 23-year-old Lawrence Thomas was killed in a car-to-car shootout just before 10:00 PM on the 8200 block of 3rd Avenue South in Birmingham, Alabama. Investigators determined that Thomas had initiated the shooting and was killed in self-defense.
