On June 27, 2016, in Bucks, Alabama, 65-year-old Duane Massingale was fatally shot in the head and chest at his home on Highway 43. His wife, 50-year-old Veronica Massingale, was also attacked, sustaining gunshot wounds to her head and arms. She was transported to USA Medical Center, where she was listed in stable condition.
