In the early hours of a Wednesday morning, the life of a dedicated Metro station manager was abruptly cut short in a senseless act of violence. Eugene Francis Neal Sr., a 52-year-old man, was shot and killed near his home in Northeast Washington, D.C., on March 25, 2009. A native of the city, Neal was a father and a respected employee of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, where he had worked since 2002.
Just a half-hour after completing his shift at the Takoma Metro station, at approximately 1:00 a.m., police responded to the sound of gunshots in the 1500 block of Hamlin Street NE. There, they discovered Neal suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
The motive for the shooting remains a mystery, as his family reported that nothing was stolen from him; his truck, keys, and wallet were all found with him.
The news devastated his family, particularly his 14-year-old son, Eugene Neal Jr., who described his father as a great man who taught him a lot and kept him on the right path. His mother, Mary Neal, made a heartfelt plea to the public for any information, stating that her son did not deserve to die in such a manner.
The Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide and Sexual Offenses Branch is handling the investigation into Neal's death. They have offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this crime.
