Dareion Quashun Walker, a 20-year-old Black / African American male, died on May 23, 2017, after gunfire erupted at Madison Landing Apartments in Madison, Alabama. In the early-morning hours, police were called to the complex and found Walker shot; the scene around the apartments quickly shifted from the ordinary quiet of a late night to a taped-off stretch of pavement, flashing lights, and investigators tracing what happened in the moments before the shooting.
As detectives worked the case, the outline that emerged pointed to a robbery attempt and a confrontation that turned lethal. Information circulating from court-record descriptions in later reporting framed the incident as a robbery-gone-wrong, with the shooting occurring during the attempt and questions lingering about who pulled the trigger in the struggle and whether the gunfire was claimed as self-defense. What became clear in the weeks that followed was that investigators were focused on people they believed were involved in setting the robbery in motion, not only the person behind the gun.
Eight days after the killing, Madison Police announced an arrest: Kiaujanee Sanders, identified as 18 at the time, was taken into custody and accused in connection with Walker’s death, facing charges that included second-degree robbery and murder. The case did not stop there. In early July, a second suspect was brought in—Louis Andrea Bowden—whose booking records reflected charges including first-degree robbery and murder, with bond information reported publicly.
