In the quiet outskirts of Carbon Hill, Alabama, a grim discovery was made on May 1, 2018, at the home of 55-year-old Hernan Antonio Padilla. He, along with 56-year-old Allen Clifford Sandlin, were found shot to death in what would unfold as a complex and far-reaching criminal investigation. The male victims' deaths were the result of a robbery that tragically turned into a double homicide, setting off an extensive inquiry by the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and other neighboring agencies.
The meticulous investigation, which involved analyzing a tremendous amount of digital data, eventually led to the identification of five individuals allegedly responsible for the deaths. Capital murder charges were brought against Michael Evan Council, Lorazo Moran, Lindettia Lynette Lowery, Brandon Dewayne Lowery, and Brittany Bell-Spates. The investigation stretched beyond Alabama, as two of the suspects, Council and Moran, were located and arrested in New Jersey with the help of the New Jersey State Police. Brandon Lowery was identified by the prosecution as the 'ringleader who hatched the plan' that led to the fatal shootings.
Over the course of the legal proceedings, four of the five defendants pleaded guilty to their roles in the murders. Michael Evan Council, the first to enter a plea, received two consecutive life sentences. Lorazo Moran also pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two life sentences. Lindettia Lynette Lowery, of Fairfield, Alabama, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two concurrent 25-year sentences. In April 2023, Brandon Lowery pleaded guilty to two counts of capital murder and received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case against the fifth suspect, Brittany Bell-Spates, was still pending as of that time. The resolution of the cases for the four co-defendants came after extensive consultation with the victims' families, bringing a measure of justice for the violent loss of Hernan Antonio Padilla and Allen Clifford Sandlin.
