In the summer of 2018, a domestic argument on a quiet street in Mulga, Alabama, escalated into a fatal encounter for 41-year-old Keith Franklin Hilyer. On the evening of July 14, deputies were dispatched to Oak Lane in Sylvan Springs following a report of a woman shooting her husband. Upon their arrival, they discovered Keith Hilyer deceased at the end of the street from a gunshot wound.
The investigation into the death of the male victim quickly focused on his wife, 33-year-old Amanda
Leigh Hilyer, who had remained at the scene. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the couple had been engaged in a heated argument in the street prior to the shooting. In a tragic turn of events, Amanda Hilyer reportedly broke into a neighbor's vehicle to steal a handgun. It was with this stolen weapon that she shot her husband, resulting in his death.
Following the incident, Amanda Hilyer was taken into custody for questioning by sheriff's detectives, and the firearm used in the shooting was recovered. Subsequently, on July 16, 2018, arrest warrants were formally issued, charging her with Murder, Unlawful Breaking and Entering a Vehicle, and Theft of Property in the second degree. She was then booked into the Jefferson County Jail with her bonds totaling $100,000.
