A dedicated police officer with the Vestavia Hills Police Department, Kimbrel was a man known for his humility and sense of humor. That evening, an argument with his wife, Stephanie Nicole Keller, over issues including finances and jealousy, turned fatal. Authorities received a 911 call just before 11 p.m.
and arrived at the Woodbrook Apartments to find Kimbrel with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to UAB Hospital, where he died in the early morning hours of May 3.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to his wife as the perpetrator. Stephanie Keller was arrested and subsequently charged with the murder of her husband.
