Earnest LaDarrius Moody Jr. was a 33-year-old Black man from Birmingham, Alabama. Known to some by the nickname "Stank," he had attended Woodrow Wilson Elementary School as a child. His life was brought to a violent end in the summer of 2021.
In the pre-dawn hours of Thursday, June 10, 2021, a fatal shooting occurred on a Birmingham street. At approximately 1:30 a.m., shots were fired from a vehicle on 14th Avenue North.
Earnest Moody was struck by the gunfire and died from his injuries.
The Birmingham Police Department launched a homicide investigation into the shooting. The case progressed quickly, and later that same day, a suspect turned himself in to police.
Authorities identified the man who surrendered as 24-year-old Deandre Brantley. He was taken into custody and charged with capital murder in connection with Moody's death. Brantley was booked into the Jefferson County Jail just after 6:00 p.m. on the evening of the shooting. As of June 2021, he was in custody awaiting legal proceedings.
