On what should have been a festive Christmas Eve, a tragic and violent event unfolded within a Meridianville, Alabama home, leaving a father and his teenage son dead. Rodney Dale Gardner, a 41-year-old male, lost his life on December 24, 2021, in a heart-wrenching murder-suicide.
The quiet of the holiday was shattered by an argument that escalated in a bedroom of the family's residence on Bermuda Lakes Drive.
Inside, Rodney Gardner and his 14-year-old son, Caleb Gardner, were engaged in a dispute that would end in unimaginable loss. The argument culminated in Caleb fatally shooting his father with a handgun before turning the weapon on himself.
The devastating incident was witnessed in part by Rodney's 16-year-old daughter, who was also in the home. Hearing the argument between her father and brother, she was startled by the sound of gunshots and fled the house to call for help. When deputies from the Madison County Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene, they discovered the bodies of both Rodney and Caleb Gardner in the same room, each with gunshot wounds.
Investigators quickly determined the sequence of events, classifying the case as a murder-suicide.
