A quiet afternoon in Meridianville, Alabama, on August 27, 2026, was shattered by a violent domestic dispute that ended in the death of 62-year-old Marcus Lanier. Deputies from the Madison County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of John Harold Drive following a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Marcus Lanier inside his home, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The individual responsible for the shooting, identified as Lanier's 18-year-old grandson, Zakarius D. Lanier, was still at the residence and was taken into custody without incident.

Investigators from the Major Crimes Unit of the Madison County Sheriff's Office quickly determined that the shooting was the result of a domestic-related incident between the grandfather and his grandson. While the specific details of what led to the fatal confrontation have not been publicly released by authorities, the investigation led to Zakarius Lanier being charged with the murder of his grandfather. Following his arrest, Zakarius Lanier was held in the Madison County Jail.

During subsequent court proceedings, a Madison County District Judge denied bond for Zakarius Lanier. In the decision, the judge noted that there was probable cause for the murder charge, highlighting the "numerous gunshot wounds inflicted by the Defendant upon his grandfather." The court also indicated, based on evidence and arguments presented, that the defendant "likely suffers from mental illness." Citing concerns for the safety of other family members and uncertainty about where Zakarius would live if released, the judge ordered that he remain held without bond as the case moves forward through the legal system. The case, a tragic event stemming from a family dispute, left a community in mourning and a young man facing a murder charge in the death of his own grandfather. Funeral services for Marcus Lanier, who was also a pastor, were held on September 5, 2026.
