In the small town of Autaugaville, Alabama, a weekend social gathering turned into a scene of violence that claimed the life of 22-year-old Cameron Jakyle Motley. On the evening of Saturday, March 12, 2022, Motley, a Black male, was among a crowd of pedestrians at the intersection of North Pickett Street and Tyus Street when gunfire erupted.
According to the Autauga County Sheriff's Office, a 2008 Cadillac SX4 SUV approached the gathering at approximately 9:00 PM, and shots were fired
from the vehicle into the crowd. Several individuals in the crowd returned fire. In the exchange, four people were struck by bullets. Three of the victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were treated and released from a local hospital. Motley, however, suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Baptist Hospital before being transferred to UAB Hospital in Birmingham. He succumbed to his wounds the following day, on March 13, 2022.
An investigation into the shooting was launched by the Autauga County Sheriff's Office. Through the collection of evidence and witness statements, investigators identified a suspect. On March 28, 2022, 21-year-old Jermichael Nixon of Autaugaville was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. Nixon was charged with Murder, Assault Second Degree, and Discharging a Firearm into an Occupied Dwelling. He was subsequently held in the Autauga Metro Jail on a $590,000 bond. At the time of his arrest, the investigation was still ongoing.
