The incident occurred around 2:10 a.m. following a large fight that broke out on the sidewalk.
At the time of his death, Jean-Simon was a student at the University of Maryland
University College, where he was in his second year with aspirations of becoming a mechanical engineer. He also worked at the university's dining facility. Described by his family as a popular and comedic young man with a laid-back personality, he was the youngest of three sons. His parents had immigrated from Haiti, a country he had always wanted to visit. His family remembers him as an individual who was not caught up in drinking and had a passion for basketball and a well-cultivated personal style.
In the immediate aftermath of the stabbing, police arrived to find a chaotic scene. An officer was reportedly injured during the melee, having been thrown to the ground while trying to break up the fight. Jean-Simon was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.
