On a Tuesday night in Washington, D.C., the sound of gunshots shattered the evening quiet in the 1500 block of V Street, Southeast. It was approximately 10:35 p.m. on April 8, 2014, when police officers from the Seventh District responded to the call. Upon their arrival, they discovered a young man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The victim was identified as Virgil Wood, a 22-year-old Black male from Southeast, D.C. Emergency services personnel from the D.C.
Fire and Emergency Medical Services transported him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. The case was ruled a homicide, and an autopsy was scheduled to be performed to officially determine the cause and manner of death.
In the wake of the shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch launched an investigation into the death of Virgil Wood. Authorities appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of the person or persons responsible for his murder. A reward of up to $25,000 was offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved in the homicide. Despite the ongoing investigation and the reward offered, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been announced in connection with the shooting.
