In the quiet subdivision of Lake Forest in Daphne, Alabama, a horrific scene unfolded on the evening of Wednesday, February 22, 2023, forever altering the lives of several families. Among the victims was Shelia Glover, a 71-year-old female, who was a beloved friend and considered family at the home on Melanie Loop where tragedy struck. An Army veteran of 22 years and a retired postal worker, Ms.
Glover was known for her kind heart and generous spirit.
That evening, police responded to multiple calls of gunfire and discovered a scene of unimaginable violence. Shelia Glover, along with her best friend Barbara Smith, 72, and Barbara's grandson, Jeremy Smith, 27, were found deceased in the backyard of the Smith home. Inside the residence, investigators located the body of Barbara's 80-year-old husband, Leonard Smith. The victims had been shot and bludgeoned.
The suspect in this brutal quadruple homicide was identified as 21-year-old Jared Tarant Smith-Bracy, the grandson of Barbara and Leonard Smith and the brother of Jeremy Smith. He was apprehended by police in a wooded area near the home shortly after the crime. According to law enforcement, Smith-Bracy had been arrested earlier that same day for a minor criminal mischief charge at the family's residence. After being bonded out of jail, a friend drove him back to the house. It is alleged that upon his return, he used the driver's gun to commit the murders.
Following his arrest, Smith-Bracy was charged with four counts of capital murder. During his arraignment in February 2023, he pleaded not guilty by reason of mental defect, and a mental evaluation was subsequently ordered. A Mobile County Grand Jury later indicted him on all four counts of capital murder in May 2024. While a definitive motive has not been publicly released, it has been suggested that an argument over household chores may have preceded the violent outburst. The case is set to proceed through the legal system.
