In the quiet community of Daphne, Alabama, a horrific act of violence shattered the peace on a February evening. Barbara Smith, a 72-year-old female, was tragically killed on February 22, 2023, in a brutal attack that also claimed the lives of three other individuals. The devastating event unfolded at her home on Melanie Loop, leaving a lasting scar on the neighborhood and the community at large.
The other victims of the massacre were her 80-year-old husband, Leonard Smith, her 27-year-old grandson, Jeremy Smith, and a beloved 70-year-old family friend, Sheila Glover.
The lone suspect in this case is Jared Tarant Smith-Bracy, the 21-year-old grandson of Barbara and Leonard Smith and the brother of Jeremy Smith. In a chilling turn of events, Smith-Bracy had been arrested for criminal mischief at the same residence earlier that day. After being released on bond, he returned to the home where the violent spree began. A witness reported hearing gunshots shortly after Smith-Bracy forced his way into the house. Investigators believe that he first shot his grandmother, Barbara, his brother, Jeremy, and the family friend, Sheila Glover, in the backyard of the home. Following the initial shootings, he then allegedly went inside and bludgeoned his grandfather, Leonard, to death with a pickaxe before returning to the backyard to further assault the other three victims with the same weapon.
Jared Smith-Bracy was apprehended by authorities while hiding in the woods behind the home and was subsequently charged with four counts of capital murder. In the ensuing legal proceedings, he entered a plea of not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. Despite his plea, a grand jury indicted him on all four counts of capital murder in May 2024. Smith-Bracy has undergone mental evaluations to determine his competency to stand for trial and remains in custody at the Baldwin County Jail without bond.
