In the quiet town of Sheffield, Alabama, a story of love and violence unfolded, culminating in the tragic death of 38-year-old Ashley Lynn Newton McClung. On the evening of October 29, 2023, what began as a domestic argument between Ashley and her 40-year-old boyfriend, Adam Christopher Narmore, escalated into a fatal encounter that would also forever alter the life of her young son.

In a selfless act of bravery, Ashley's 10-year-old son, Cayson, attempted to intervene and protect his mother. His courageous efforts, however, were met with gunfire as Narmore shot the young boy in the arm and face before turning the weapon on Ashley, fatally wounding her. In the final act of the tragedy, Narmore then took his own life with the same shotgun.
Responding to a call about a juvenile with a gunshot wound, Sheffield Police arrived at the Park Place Apartments to a grim scene. They found Ashley McClung and Adam Narmore deceased in the living room. Cayson, though seriously injured, was conscious and able to recount the horrific events to the officers. He was initially transported to a local hospital and later airlifted to a children's hospital in Birmingham for specialized care.
The incident was not the first sign of trouble in the couple's relationship. Court records revealed that McClung had previously filed a domestic violence complaint against Narmore in August of that year, alleging that he had physically assaulted her. Narmore had pleaded not guilty to a charge of third-degree domestic violence and was scheduled for a bench trial in December. The tragedy of Ashley's death highlighted a history of domestic turbulence that ultimately ended in the most devastating way possible. In the aftermath, the community rallied around Cayson, who was later honored with the Citizenship Medal of Valor by the Sheffield Police and Fire departments for his heroic attempt to save his mother.
