In the autumn of 2023, the family of Donald Cash, a 52-year-old Black man from Birmingham, Alabama, grew increasingly worried when he seemed to vanish. Cash, who owned a family freight hauling business, was last seen on September 26, working on a truck at his home. His truck was later discovered abandoned about 10 miles away, deepening the mystery of his disappearance.
For weeks, his loved ones pleaded for answers, describing it as if he had "just vanished from this earth".
The investigation into the missing persons case took a grim turn on November 6, 2023. Acting on a search warrant, Birmingham Police detectives descended on a home on Brighton Road, the residence of Donald Cash's son, Ledarius "Tre" Cash. In the backyard, investigators noticed a fresh pile of compost and topsoil, arranged to look like a garden. A cadaver dog was brought to the scene and quickly alerted officers to the suspicious area. As they began to dig, they unearthed a shallow grave containing skeletal remains.
The following day, the Jefferson County Coroner's Office confirmed the remains were human, and an autopsy revealed the victim had been shot. Though the remains were not immediately identified, suspicion fell upon Ledarius Cash. He was initially arrested and charged with abuse of a corpse for allegedly burning, dismembering, or improperly burying the body believed to be his father's. He was released after posting a $250,000 bond. This was not his first encounter with law enforcement during the investigation; he had been arrested just three days after his father's disappearance on a charge of receiving stolen property involving two handguns.
In late December 2023, the Jefferson County Coroner's Office confirmed that the remains found in the backyard were indeed those of Donald Cash. With this positive identification, the investigation culminated in a third arrest for his son. Ledarius "Tre" Cash, 30, was taken into custody and charged with the murder of his father. Authorities believe he shot his father to death around the time he went missing in September. Following the murder charge, he was held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.
