Ritchie Derrell Freeney, 35, a Black man from Montgomery, Alabama, was shot on the evening of Friday, December 22, 2023, in what police would later treat as the beginning of a homicide case. The gunfire erupted around 7:23 p.m. in the 3300 block of McElvy Street, a residential stretch on Montgomery’s west side.
