Jaylen Whatley, a 19-year-old Black man, was killed late on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2023, in Selma, Alabama, when gunfire erupted along the 2400 block of North Church Street. Investigators later described it as more than a sudden burst of violence: court documents said he was ambushed, his vehicle struck by multiple rounds as the night closed in around him.
According to the allegations laid out after the fact, the shooting did not end at the car.
Whatley was able to get out and run, but the attackers were said to have followed, chasing him down and firing again until he was hit multiple times. In the immediate aftermath, authorities did not publicly give a motive, and the killing left a neighborhood with the kind of unanswered silence that hangs over a street long after the flashing lights fade.
For a time, the case appeared to stall in public view. Records described both suspected shooters being questioned shortly after the killing and then released, a detail that only sharpened the sense of uncertainty for anyone waiting for accountability. Investigators continued working the case, and later—after additional investigation—arrest warrants were issued.
Those warrants surfaced publicly in late January 2024, when a multi-day fugitive operation in Selma led by the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, with help from local and state agencies, brought in suspects wanted on serious felony allegations. Two men, Fredricquez Richardson and Frederick Whitt, were arrested on murder charges connected to the Christmas Eve shooting death of Jaylen Whatley. The filings did not provide a motive, but they did outline the alleged sequence of an ambush, a desperate attempt to flee, and a chase that ended in lethal gunfire.
