On December 24, 2023, 19-year-old Jaylen Whatley was fatally shot around 10:30 PM in the 2400 block of Church Street in Selma, Alabama. This incident marked the city's 20th homicide of the year. At the time, Selma Police Lieutenant Ray Blanks reported that there were no suspects or known motives in the case.
