On the evening of April 13, 2024, in the quiet community of Independence in Autauga County, Alabama, a domestic dispute escalated into a tragic and fatal event. Inside a home on County Road 40, 35-year-old Melissa Sarah Bishop Banks, a dedicated and compassionate nurse at Prattville Junior High, was found dead from a gunshot wound. The incident marked the first homicide in the county in two years.
Authorities were alerted to the unfolding tragedy around 10 p.m.
and deputies from the Autauga County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the residence. Upon their arrival, they discovered the body of the young woman. The investigation quickly identified her husband, Christopher Banks, as the person responsible for her death.
After the shooting, Christopher Banks fled the scene, prompting a search by law enforcement. He was later tracked to neighboring Dallas County. There, he was found deceased from what authorities determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators have since classified the case as a murder-suicide. Fortunately, there were no children present in the home at the time of the initial shooting. Melissa Banks is survived by her son, Greyson Kamerow, her parents, and a sister.
