Ashley Keith Fulghum, a 42-year-old White man from Montgomery, Alabama, was known to some as Keith. Loved ones remembered him as a funny, sweet, and spontaneous person. A sister called him "the best big brother a sister could ever have," and others described him as a kindhearted and helpful man with the "sweetest soul." He was a father to a son named Jackson, an uncle, and a cherished friend who was considered a "big brother from another mother."
On the afternoon of Monday, June 24,
2024, his life came to a violent end. Around 12:50 p.m., police and fire medics were dispatched to the 2100 block of Plum Street in the Highland Park area after a man's body was discovered. First responders found Fulghum at the scene, where he was pronounced dead from a fatal gunshot wound.
The Montgomery Police Department launched a homicide investigation, marking the city's 37th of the year. Investigators quickly identified a person of interest and took him into custody. The suspect, 65-year-old Kevin Chase of Montgomery, was arrested and charged with one count of murder in connection with Fulghum's death. He was subsequently booked into the Montgomery County Detention Facility, where he was held without bond.
While authorities did not publicly release a motive for the shooting, court records indicated a past history between the two men. In 2021, Chase had reportedly tried to evict Fulghum from a residence on the same street where his body was later found. As of June 2024, the case against Kevin Chase was pending.
